Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C1956391

NCI Thesaurus Code: C35065  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Disease or Syndrome

NCIt Definition: An autoimmune, systemic, giant cell granulomatous arteritis predominantly involving the arteries that supply blood to the central nervous system, head and eyes. Superficial arteries of the scalp that are involved tend to be enlarged and tender. Signs and symptoms include headaches, myalgias, visual disturbances, and skin necrosis.

RADLEX Definition: A systemic autoimmune vasculitis occurring primarily in people over the age of 50. Pathologic features include a necrotizing panarteritis including granulomas and giant cells. There is a predilection for involvement of central nervous system blood vessels and the most frequent neurologic complication is an optic neuropathy, ischemic. Large blood vessels may become involved, including the aorta. Clinical manifestations may include myalgias, weight loss, headache, visual loss, necrosis of the skin or tongue, and chest discomfort. Superficial scalp arteries may become tender and enlarged. A related condition, juvenile temporal arteritis, tends to occur in the first or second decade of life. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p856) [MeSH]

GARD Definition: Giant cell arteritis, also known as "temporal arteritis" or "Horton's disease," is a form of vasculitis affecting medium and large sized blood vessels, especially those of the aorta and arteries going from the aorta to the arms, legs and the head. Giant cell arteritis most frequently affects the arteries in the head, leading to narrowing and sometimes to complete blockage of the blood vessel. This results in the surrounding tissues being deprived of an adequate blood supply. When giant cell arteritis involves the arteries that supply blood to the eyes, blindness in one or both eyes may develop suddenly. Along with visual changes, the most common symptoms in giant cell arteritis include headaches, pain in the jaw or tongue muscles when eating or talking, tenderness of the scalp, fevers, and arthritis, particularly pain and stiffness of the shoulders and hips. This pain and stiffness of the shoulders and hips is called polymyalgia rheumatica. Polymyalgia rheumatica can occur without giant cell arteritis. - this information is from GARD/ORDR/NCATS.

MEDLINEPLUS Definition:

Giant cell arteritis is a disorder that causes inflammation of your arteries, usually in the scalp, neck, and arms. It narrows the arteries, which keeps blood from flowing well. Giant cell arteritis often occurs with another disorder called polymyalgia rheumatica. Both are more common in women than in men. They almost always affect people over the age of 50.

Early symptoms of giant cell arteritis resemble the flu: fatigue, loss of appetite, and fever. Other symptoms include

  • Headaches
  • Pain and tenderness over the temples
  • Double vision or visual loss, dizziness
  • Problems with coordination and balance
  • Pain in your jaw and tongue

Your doctor will make the diagnosis based on your medical history, symptoms, and a physical exam. There is no single test to diagnose giant cell arteritis, but you may have tests that measure inflammation.

Treatment is usually with corticosteroids. Early treatment is important; otherwise there is a risk of permanent vision loss or stroke. However, when properly treated, giant cell arteritis rarely comes back.

NIH: National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases

CSP Definition: subacute, granulomatous arteritis involving the external carotid arteries, especially the temporal artery; occurs in elderly persons and may be manifested by constitutional symptoms, particularly severe headache, and sometimes sudden unilateral blindness; shares many of the symptoms of polymyalgia rheumatica.

MSH Definition: A systemic autoimmune disorder that typically affects medium and large ARTERIES, usually leading to occlusive granulomatous vasculitis with transmural infiltrate containing multinucleated GIANT CELLS. The TEMPORAL ARTERY is commonly involved. This disorder appears primarily in people over the age of 50. Symptoms include FEVER; FATIGUE; HEADACHE; visual impairment; pain in the jaw and tongue; and aggravation of pain by cold temperatures. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed)
