Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0042384

NCI Thesaurus Code: C26912  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Disease or Syndrome

NCIt Definition: An inflammatory process involving the wall of the vessels (large, medium, or small-sized vessels). The inflammatory process may cause necrosis or formation of granulomas in the vascular wall. It may be the result of an autoimmune disorder, infection, or malignancy. Representative examples include polyarteritis nodosa, temporal arteritis, Wegener granulomatosis, Kawasaki disease, Takayasu arteritis, and Henoch-Schonlein purpura.

RADLEX Definition: Inflammation of a blood vessel. [MeSH]

GARD Definition: Vasculitis is an inflammation of the vascular system, which includes the veins, arteries, and capillaries. There are many different forms of vasculitis, including temporal arteritis, primary angiitis of the central nervous system, Takayasu disease, periarteritis nodosa, Kawasaki disease, Churg-Strauss syndrome, Wegener granulomatosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren syndrome, Behcet disease and others. Signs and symptoms of vasculitis vary depending on the form and on the part of the body affected. In general, the cause of vasculitis is thought to be a faulty immune system response. Treatment of vasculitis depends upon the specific diagnosis. Most of forms of vasculitis respond well to steroid drugs. Some may also require treatment with an immunosuppressive drug, such as cyclophosphamide. - this information is from GARD/ORDR/NCATS.

HPO Definition: Inflammation of blood vessel. [HPO:probinson]

MEDLINEPLUS Definition:

Vasculitis is an inflammation of the blood vessels. It happens when the body's immune system attacks the blood vessel by mistake. It can happen because of an infection, a medicine, or another disease. The cause is often unknown.

Vasculitis can affect arteries, veins and capillaries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the heart to the body's organs. Veins are the vessels that carry blood back to the heart. Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that connect the small arteries and veins.

When a blood vessel becomes inflamed, it can

  • Narrow, making it more difficult for blood to get through
  • Close off completely so that blood can't get through
  • Stretch and weaken so much that it bulges. The bulge is called an aneurysm. If it bursts, it can cause dangerous bleeding inside the body.

Symptoms of vasculitis can vary, but usually include fever, swelling and a general sense of feeling ill. The main goal of treatment is to stop the inflammation. Steroids and other medicines to stop inflammation are often helpful.

CTCAE Definition: A disorder characterized by inflammation involving the wall of a vessel.

NICHD Definition: An inflammatory process involving the wall of either arteries or veins, often classified by vessel size (large, medium, or small). The characteristic histopathology reveals inflammatory cells within the vessel wall accompanied by fibrinoid necrosis. Vasculitis may be the result of an autoimmune disorder, infection, or malignancy.

CSP Definition: inflammation of a blood vessel.

MSH Definition: Inflammation of any one of the blood vessels, including the ARTERIES; VEINS; and rest of the vasculature system in the body.
