Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0029134

NCI Thesaurus Code: C84950  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Disease or Syndrome

NCIt Definition: A disorder characterized by inflammation of the optic nerve. Causes include autoimmune disorders, infections, toxins, drugs, and multiple sclerosis. It may manifest with acute loss of vision and pain.

GARD Definition: Optic neuritis is inflammation of the optic nerve, the nerve that carries the visual signal from the eye to the brain.  The condition may cause sudden, reduced vision in the affected eye(s). While the cause of optic neuritis is unknown, it has been associated with autoimmune diseases, infections, multiple sclerosis, drug toxicity and deficiency of vitamin B-12. Vision often returns to normal within 2-3 weeks without treatment. In some cases, corticosteroids are given to speed recovery. If known, the underlying cause should be treated. - this information is from GARD/ORDR/NCATS.

HPO Definition: Inflammation of the optic nerve. [HPO:sdoelken]

NICHD Definition: Inflammation of the optic nerve.

CSP Definition: inflammation of the second cranial nerve or optic nerve; commonly associated conditions include autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, infections, and granulomatous diseases.

MSH Definition: Inflammation of the optic nerve. Commonly associated conditions include autoimmune disorders such as MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, infections, and granulomatous diseases. Clinical features include retro-orbital pain that is aggravated by eye movement, loss of color vision, and contrast sensitivity that may progress to severe visual loss, an afferent pupillary defect (Marcus-Gunn pupil), and in some instances optic disc hyperemia and swelling. Inflammation may occur in the portion of the nerve within the globe (neuropapillitis or anterior optic neuritis) or the portion behind the globe (retrobulbar neuritis or posterior optic neuritis).
