Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0025376

NCI Thesaurus Code: C71632  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Pharmacologic Substance

Semantic Type: Organic Chemical

NCIt Definition: A synthetic piperidine ester with opioid analgesic activity. Meperidine mimics the actions of endogenous neuropeptides via opioid receptors, thereby producing the characteristic morphine-like effects on the mu-opioid receptor, including analgesia, euphoria, sedation, respiratory depression, miosis, bradycardia and physical dependence.

CSP Definition: synthetic narcotic analgesic used where a relatively short duration of analgesia is desired; abuse of this drug may lead to dependence.

MSH Definition: A narcotic analgesic that can be used for the relief of most types of moderate to severe pain, including postoperative pain and the pain of labor. Prolonged use may lead to dependence of the morphine type; withdrawal symptoms appear more rapidly than with morphine and are of shorter duration.

SOS A synthetic opioid that also is known as pethidine. One of the most widely used of the opioids, especially in childbirth and for relief of other severe pains. A drug frequently preferred by opiate narcotic abusers in the medical professions, it has pharmacological effects similar to morphine. AOD
SOS Classification: narcotic analgesic agonists. (RIS 27:214--1 entry; Demerol, RIS 27:204--2 entries) AOD
SOS Remainder of definition: Although its actions are similar to those of opioids, meperidine use is further characterized by a high incidence of dysphoria and irritability, and sometimes myoclonic twitches, seizures, and delirium with prolonged use. Note: Unclear in definition if only delirium results from prolonged use or all of the symptoms such as twitches and seizures? AOD
