Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0020541

NCI Thesaurus Code: C3119  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Disease or Syndrome

NCIt Definition: Increased blood pressure in the portal venous system. It is most commonly caused by cirrhosis. Other causes include portal vein thrombosis, Budd-Chiari syndrome, and right heart failure. Complications include ascites, esophageal varices, encephalopathy, and splenomegaly.

GARD Definition: Portal hypertension is abnormally high blood pressure in branches of the portal vein, the large vein that brings blood from the intestine to the liver. Portal hypertension itself does not cause symptoms, but complications from the condition can lead to an enlarged abdomen, abdominal discomfort, confusion, drowsiness and internal bleeding. It may be caused by a variety of conditions, but cirrhosis is the most common cause in Western countries. Treatment is generally directed toward the cause of the condition, although emergency treatment is sometimes needed for serious complications. - this information is from GARD/ORDR/NCATS.

HPO Definition: Increased pressure in the portal vein. [HPO:probinson]

CTCAE Definition: A disorder characterized by an increase in blood pressure in the portal venous system.

NCI-GLOSS Definition: High blood pressure in the vein that carries blood to the liver from the stomach, small and large intestines, spleen, pancreas, and gallbladder. It is usually caused by a block in the blood flow through the liver due to cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver.

NICHD Definition: Increased blood pressure in the portal venous system which manifests as ascites, splenomegaly and/or varices.

CSP Definition: abnormally increased pressure in the portal venous system, frequently seen in cirrhosis of the liver and other conditions causing obstruction of the portal vein.

MSH Definition: Abnormal increase of resistance to blood flow within the hepatic PORTAL SYSTEM, frequently seen in LIVER CIRRHOSIS and conditions with obstruction of the PORTAL VEIN.
