Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0017668

NCI Thesaurus Code: C37308  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Disease or Syndrome

NCIt Definition: A renal disorder characterized by sclerotic lesions in the glomeruli. Causes include drugs, viruses, and malignancies (lymphomas), or it may be idiopathic. It presents with asymptomatic proteinuria or nephritic syndrome and it may lead to renal failure.

GARD Definition: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a type of kidney disorder. It is characterized by scar tissue that forms in some of the glomeruli in the kidney. FSGS may cause non-specific signs and symptoms, including protein in the urine, elevated levels of creatinine, and swelling. In many cases the cause of FSGS can not be determined. Some cases are thought to be associated with congenital kidney defects, urine backing up into the kidneys, obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, sickle cell anemia, or viruses (e.g., HIV).   The goal of treatment is to control symptoms and prevent chronic kidney failure.  Even with treatment, many people with FSGS progress to kidney failure within 5 to 20 years. - this information is from GARD/ORDR/NCATS.

HPO Definition: Segmental accumulation of scar tissue in individual (but not all) glomeruli. [Eurenomics:fschaefer]

NICHD Definition: Segmental scarring of the glomerulus, which may result in isolated proteinuria or nephrotic syndrome, which affects only part of the glomerulus and only some of the glomeruli.

MSH Definition: A clinicopathological syndrome or diagnostic term for a type of glomerular injury that has multiple causes, primary or secondary. Clinical features include PROTEINURIA, reduced GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE, and EDEMA. Kidney biopsy initially indicates focal segmental glomerular consolidation (hyalinosis) or scarring which can progress to globally sclerotic glomeruli leading to eventual KIDNEY FAILURE.
