Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0014008

NCI Thesaurus Code: C84686  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Disease or Syndrome

NCIt Definition: A syndrome characterized by flattening or regression of the pituitary gland within the sella turcica cavity, resulting in an MRI image of an empty sella turcica. Signs and symptoms are secondary to pituitary gland hypofunction.

GARD Definition: Empty sella syndrome (ESS) is a condition that involves the sella turcica, a bony structure at the base of the brain that protects the pituitary gland. There is a primary and secondary form of the condition. The primary form occurs when a structural defect above the pituitary gland increases pressure in the sella turcica and causes the gland to flatten. The secondary form occurs when the pituitary gland is damaged due to injury, a tumor, surgery or radiation therapy. Some people with ESS have no symptoms. People with secondary ESS may have symptoms of decreased pituitary function such as absence of menstruation, infertility, fatigue, and intolerance to stress and infection. In children, ESS may be associated with early onset of puberty, growth hormone deficiency, pituitary tumors, or pituitary gland dysfunction. Treatment focuses on the symptoms present in each person. - this information is from GARD/ORDR/NCATS.

NICHD Definition: A condition in which the pituitary gland is displaced or absent from the Sella Turkic (pituitary fossa), which appears empty on radiographic examination. Individuals may be asymptomatic or deficient in one or more pituitary hormones.

MSH Definition: A condition when the SELLA TURCICA is not filled with pituitary tissue. The pituitary gland is either compressed, atrophied, or removed. There are two types: (1) primary empty sella is due a defect in the sella diaphragm leading to arachnoid herniation into the sellar space; (2) secondary empty sella is associated with the removal or treatment of PITUITARY NEOPLASMS.
