Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0013261

NCI Thesaurus Code: C84678  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Disease or Syndrome

NCIt Definition: A rare disorder affecting the muscles of the eye. It is characterized by an abnormal contraction of some eye muscles and failure of contraction of other eye muscles. It leads to limited abduction and adduction of the affected eye.

GARD Definition: Duane syndrome is a disorder of eye movement. This condition prevents outward movement of the eye (toward the ear), and in some cases may also limit inward eye movement (toward the nose). As the eye moves inward, the eyelids partially close and the eyeball pulls back (retracts) into its socket. Usually only one eye is affected. Some people with Duane syndrome develop amblyopia ("lazy eye"), a condition that causes vision loss in the affected eye. Most cases occur without other signs and symptoms. There are three forms of Duane syndrome, designated types 1, 2, and 3. The types vary in which eye movements are most severely restricted (inward, outward, or both). All three types are characterized by retraction of the eyeball as the eye moves inward and are inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion.   - this information is from GARD/ORDR/NCATS.

HPO Definition: Duane anomaly is a congenital eye movement impairment with limitation of the ability to adduct or abduct the eye. When affected eyes are adducted (moved inwards towards the nose), the eyeball retracts and the palpebral fissure narrows. [HPO:probinson]

MSH Definition: A syndrome characterized by marked limitation of abduction of the eye, variable limitation of adduction and retraction of the globe, and narrowing of the palpebral fissure on attempted adduction. The condition is caused by aberrant innervation of the lateral rectus by fibers of the OCULOMOTOR NERVE.
