Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0010417

NCI Thesaurus Code: C12326  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Congenital Abnormality

NCIt Definition: The failure of one or both testes of a male fetus to descend from the abdomen into the scrotum during the late part of pregnancy. If not surgically corrected in early childhood, males may be at increased risk for testicular cancer later in life.

HPO Definition: Testis in inguinal canal. That is, absence of one or both testes from the scrotum owing to failure of the testis or testes to descend through the inguinal canal to the testis. [HPO:probinson, pmid:23650202]

NCI-GLOSS Definition: A condition in which one or both testicles fail to move from the abdomen, where they develop before birth, into the scrotum. Undescended testicles may increase the risk for development of testicular cancer.

NICHD Definition: The persistent failure of one or both testes to descend into the scrotum.

CSP Definition: failure of testes to descend into scrotum.

MSH Definition: A developmental defect in which a TESTIS or both TESTES failed to descend from high in the ABDOMEN to the bottom of the SCROTUM. Testicular descent is essential to normal SPERMATOGENESIS which requires temperature lower than the BODY TEMPERATURE. Cryptorchidism can be subclassified by the location of the maldescended testis.

HPO_COMMENT The gonad is mobile and can be retracted superiorly by the cremaster muscle reflex stimulated, for instance, by cold or touch. A retracted testis is not cryptorchidism. An abdominal testis cannot be distinguished by physical examination from an (Apparently) absent testis and requires radiological (or, rarely, surgical) procedures for assessment. HPO
