Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0005716

NCI Thesaurus Code: C34428  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Disease or Syndrome

NCIt Definition: A fungal infection caused by inhalation of spores of Blastomyces dermatitidis. It presents with flu-like symptoms including fever, chills, cough, pleuritic chest pain and myalgias. It may lead to a chronic granulomatous pulmonary infection and disseminate to other anatomic sites including skin, nervous system and bones.

GARD Definition: Blastomycosis is a rare infection that may develop when people inhale a fungus called Blastomyces dermatitidis, a fungus that is found in moist soil, particularly where there is rotting vegetation. The fungus enters the body through the lungs, infecting them. The fungus then spreads to other areas of the body. The infection may affect the skin, bones and joints, and other areas. The disease usually affects people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV or who have had an organ transplant. - this information is from GARD/ORDR/NCATS.

NICHD Definition: A fungal infection that is usually caused by inhalation of spores of Blastomyces dermatitidis; it most commonly presents with fever, chills, cough, pleuritic chest pain, and myalgias. The infection can disseminate to other anatomic sites, including skin, nervous system, and bones.

CSP Definition: infection caused by fungi of the genus Blastomyces.

MSH Definition: A fungal infection that may appear in two forms: 1, a primary lesion characterized by the formation of a small cutaneous nodule and small nodules along the lymphatics that may heal within several months; and 2, chronic granulomatous lesions characterized by thick crusts, warty growths, and unusual vascularity and infection in the middle or upper lobes of the lung.
