Terms & Properties

Concept Unique Identifier (CUI): C0003850

NCI Thesaurus Code: C34398  (see NCI Thesaurus info)

Semantic Type: Disease or Syndrome

NCIt Definition: A vascular disorder characterized by thickening and hardening of the walls of the arteries.

RADLEX Definition: Thickening and loss of elasticity of the walls of medium and large muscular arteries with lesions in the innermost layer of the artery (arterial intima). This disease process of atherogenesis includes the retention of cholesterol-rich lipoproteins and their binding to proteoglycans in the arterial intima, generation of proinflammatory molecules that recruit macrophages to the subendothelial space, formation of foam cells, and eventual calcification of the arterial wall. These arterial plaques (atheromas) contain carbohydrates; blood; and calcium. [MeSH]

HPO Definition: Sclerosis (hardening) of the arteries with increased thickness of the wall of arteries as well as increased stiffness and a loss of elasticity. [HPO:probinson]

CSP Definition: thickening and loss of elasticity of arterial walls; atherosclerosis is the most common form of arteriosclerosis and involves lipid deposition and thickening of the intimal cell layers within arteries; additional forms of arteriosclerosis involve calcification of the media of muscular arteries (Monkeberg medial calcific sclerosis) and thickening of the walls of small arteries or arterioles due to cell proliferation or hyaline deposition (arteriolosclerosis).

MSH Definition: Thickening and loss of elasticity of the walls of ARTERIES of all sizes. There are many forms classified by the types of lesions and arteries involved, such as ATHEROSCLEROSIS with fatty lesions in the ARTERIAL INTIMA of medium and large muscular arteries.

HPO_COMMENT Although arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis are often used as if they were synonyms, they are not. Atherosclerosis is the most common type of arteriosclerosis, and is caused by plaque building up in the vessel, which in turn causes sclerosis, increased stiffness, and loss of elasticity of the affected arteries.
